The title refers not to my return visit to the Island of Foula, but a step-back in time to when the movie `THE EDGE OF THE WORLD` was made here back in 1936, followed in 1978 by `RETURN TO THE EDGE OF THE WORLD` in which some of the cast & crew of the earlier production by great British movie director Michael Powell, returned to the Island. My visit to Foula lasted only 3 days, though these 3 days spent on this magical island, will have happy memories for a very long time.
Visits were made to the various locations used by Mr Powell on both movies, and a few comparison shots taken to show the remnants today of the old crofts, kirk & dramatic scenery.
Armed with a map supplied by Foula Heritage, I set about finding some of the locations, and a real bonus to the trip was meeting one of the last, if not the last surviving actress in the original 1936 film, Edith Gray of Dykes. Edith was an extra, as were most of the Islanders at that time, she is now in her 80s and a very endearing old lady, and in fact the eldest of all the inhabitants of Foula.
Hope you enjoy the pages which are just a taster of what is hoped to be produced in a little book by Foula Heritage.
This site is dedicated to Michael Powell and all the friendly folk of Foula.
